“The notion of political correctness declares certain topics, certain expressions, even certain gestures, off-limits. What began as a crusade for civility has soured into a cause of conflict and even censorship.” (Quoted from George Bush)
“There is a national problem with suppressing free speech at high schools and colleges in the name of political correctness, and it disproportionately affects conservative and Christian students and student organizations.” (Quoted from David French)
“As the push for political correctness increases, common sense decreases in equal proportion.” (Quoted from Don Stuart)
I consider the term “politically correct” to be the greatest roadblock of all time when it comes to honest and open discussion of any topic regardless of how controversial it may be. Let me give you some examples of how liberals use political correctness to stifle honest debate. A conservative says to a liberal: “Let’s find ways to help the black community lessen their single-mother crisis”. Since the liberal does not want to lose control of the single-mother vote by actually helping find solutions, the liberal reply is: “You are a racist!” A conservative says to a liberal: “Let’s ask some women how we can help them with juggling motherhood and career”. Since the liberal does not feel motherhood should be equal to career, the liberal reply is: “You are a sexist!” The conservative says to the liberal: “Can we better protect the American people by giving the CIA and FBI more weapons in the war against extremists and terrorists?” Since the liberal believes we are the extremists and terrorists the liberal reply is: “You are an Islamaphobe!” If you will not or cannot advance the discussion with your ideas then your only recourse is name-calling.
Is there anything more ludicrous than being offended by the name of a sports team? Redskins, Saints, Warriors, Bulls, Seminoles, Bucks, Yankees, Red Sox, Cowboys, Savages, Braves, Padres, Brownies, Indians, Fighting Irish, and the list goes on and on. The name Redskins is more offensive to some white liberals than it is to most American Indians. Should atheists be offended by the names Saints and Padres? Should the fighting Irish mascot be offensive to pacifists? Should the names Bulls and Bucks be offensive to heifers and does? I have to assume that Southerners must be offended by the name Yankees!
What is offensive is the fake outrage exhibited by some of the offended. If it is that offensive the solution is simple: don’t put yourself in a position that will cause the offense. If you see a sign that has the offensive words on it look away; don’t go to the games; don’t read the sports page in your favorite birdcage liner; refrain from talking sports with your brother-in-law; stop going to the sports bars; change the channel on the TV and watch a less offensively-named team. Some of these mascot names have been around in excess of 100 years, why suddenly are the names so offensive? Has society changed so much in the recent past that we actually enjoy being offended or do we enjoy the status of victimhood? Life is too short and too precious to waste time on such matters.
There is a never ending outrage about the Washington Redskins football team owner refusing to drop the name Redskins. I hope the owner can hold up to the relentless barrage of idiocy aimed at him. They were originally the Boston Redskins beginning in 1932 and became the Washington Redskins in 1937. There wasn’t much controversy about the name until 2004, 72 years after their original naming. It used to take a long time to offend a liberal but not any longer. As Hillary would say: “at this point what difference does it make?” Don’t let the word get out, but I would agree with Hillary on this one.
The political left has advanced political correctness to a fine art. They have managed to keep the political right from discussing any of their liberal ideological failings simply by stifling discussion with name-calling. I honestly believe that even the liberals were surprised how easy and effective that would be in silencing their politically-weak opponents.
God Bless America!!!
